Human Pregnancy Test and Frogs

You may well ask, “What the hell do frogs have to do with human pregnancy tests?!”

The African clawed frog  was imported around the world for its use in pregnancy tests. Doctors would ship urine samples to frog labs, where technicians would inject female frogs with a bit of the urine into their hind leg. The animals would be placed back into their tanks, and in the morning the technicians would check for tell-tale frog eggs dotting the water. If the female frog had ovulated, that meant the woman who provided the urine was pregnant and the pregnancy hormone,  had kicked off ovulation in the frog. From here, using the frogs DNA it was just a matter of time for scientist to copy and develop a synthetic means and replace the frog .
The Mexican Horse Thief knows all sorts of irrelevant, but interesting things.

23. Sunrise Sunset Series

You may have noticed that not many of the photos in the series are “award winning” shots; that is because I am posting the good and the bad. The “bad” ones are lessons to be learned, that we discuss in Photography 101, the “good” ones come as a result of said discussions.

Rhino Wars – On Causes

The original post was written by myself in 2014, One Man's Opinion blog but people said tha the ANC would not be involved in the Rhino killings..... I rest my case.

Firstly, no matter what cause you choose to fight, until the ludicrously high rate of corruption in South Africa is addressed and put right, we stand no chance of success. If by some miracle all the hundreds of causes one sees on facebook could join and fight this common enemy we have a small chance, not of ending the corruption; that is unrealistic even within the realms of miracles, but of bringing it down to “acceptable” norms of this modern society we have created.

The second problem of causes is the amount of armchair warriors we find, they latch on to a cause and sail forth, mainly with a vague half assed theory and fuck all experience. Sitting in a plush chair on an expensive laptop they blow smoke with cyber generated word. My personal pet hate is all the people that post the comments about killing the poachers. It shows not only ignorance but total lack of understanding in general.
Highly emotive, and useless. I too doubt if 99% of the people that cyber scream, that given the chance they would not only kill the poachers but mutilate them as well, could. Killing a man, any man is a ….. difficult thing and changes you for life. They should pray that they never have to.

Instead of sitting doing a whole bunch of ranting and raving about the rhino, if a percentage got off their backsides and in their posh 4×4 and went into the hot zones, volunteering to help patrol or take out the guys in an APU, which has a broken down vehicle it would do more good for the rhino that the hundreds of hours they waste typing all sorts of shit on their favourite facebook group.
As usual this is… just one man’s opinion.

13. Flowers and Plants Series

This Series is not about great photography. It is, as  mentioned, firstly, about finding pretty things in ugly places. Then just a record of what flora I found in my travels.

Facebook taking a backseat to Flipboard

Approximately a month back I came across Flipboard on the bloggers site called Niume. Niume  I have found to be a very good platform for reaching a new audience, the downside is  it does not drive traffic back to your sites As my WordPress site, One Man’s Opinion and my Mexican Horse Thief page on Facebook are my primary focus, this is a bit of a disappointment.  From day one of my attempt at being a blogger/writer finding the primary site to use has been a pain. Facebook  has for the past seven years,  lead the field at driving traffic to One Man’s Opinion;  to say “by far” would be an understatement of note. Believe me I have tried many, many sites to get traffic,  Tumblr, Reddit, LinkedIn, MySpace,  Google+,  Pinterest just to name a few.

Always ready to try a new thing I signed up for Flipboard, the first thing I found and really liked was there concept of Magazines.   I am a bloody Gemini and jump all over the place it is hard to say, “My blog is about…..” .  In Flipboard I published a few Magazines, Photography, Short Stories, Mexican Horse Thief, Rhino Wars and Strange Classrooms. That done I went to One Man’s Opinion and copied links for all the articles I have written and pasted them in the relevant Magazine. I did not expect much, cynical bugger that I am.

Slowly at first, I saw the stats for where  my traffic was coming from showed more and more from Flipboard, which I had not been spending much time on at all. Paying a bit more attention to this site I found that it is also the best place to find info on subjects that interest me, much better than any of the other more popular sites. I actually do not like Tumbler and Reddit at all, and the Reader in WordPress takes so long to load that I get bored waiting and leave before read anything.
Then, yesterday, checking my stats I was astonished to find that Flipboard is now sending me just over 80% more traffic than Facebook!

I spend 90% of my time and effort on Facebook, up until now that is. That is going to change.

I would strongly recommend that you go check out Flipboard, now!

In the Lion's Den

A short story about just one of my adventures while doing Rhino Anti Poaching.
We had not seen hide nor hair of the lion for weeks, so when Joseph spotted one of the males in the thick bush we were happy. It was barely visible in the beam, that is how thick the bush was at this end of the reserve. We watched for a while trying to spot his brother, they were never far from each other, but we could not find him, so we then proceeded to resume our perimeter patrol. Or tried too.

Not 100m and we had another flat. Shit. Our spare was also flat, as usual, the ongoing fight to get new tyres for our vehicle was one of the many we were losing with Mabula. Now I may have mentioned this before, but Joseph was the bravest of all my chaps, so I was glad it was he riding shotgun with me this night. Although, another sore point, we had not even a pop gun between the lot of us, never mind a shotgun. I have had to threaten to bliksem the other guys in order to get them to help with flats in the Big Five reserve, not Joseph, he was already out the bakkie and unloading the portable pump, with one eye on the area we had just seen the lion. I attached the pump and we waited, it was not the top of the range pump that one would have liked and pretty slow.

Standing where we were now, it was fucking slow! Joseph heard that the air was escaping and then we both saw the dust in the road been blown off by the air from a hole in the side wall of the tyre. I did another check, with the torch, none of the lions were sneaking up on us as far as I could see, so I ventured a little way into the bush. I needed a thick acacia thorn. I found what I needed and plugged the hole with that. We then pumped the tyre and proceeded to the reserves gate at a speed, well, as fast as the road would allow that is.

Once out the gate we were in the part of the reserve that had no lion and we checked our repair job, it was holding ok, we could go collect the guys on OP, just we would have to stop and pump the tyre every 20km or so. That was alright, we only had to worry about hippo now when we stopped. I had to get Dean to do something about our tyre situation, one night was the night that we would pick up shit, especially with those two new, young Kalahari males……
